How Was Your Relationship With Yourself Over The Christmas Holidays?

This is often a period where we question our lifestyle, routines, relationships, decisions and where we are at in our lives. Our answers are often confusing, scary, frustrating or unanswerable.

We tend to measure ourselves either through accomplishments of the ego (eg a promotion at work, a bigger home, an overseas holiday, a new car etc.) or the emotional richness of our spiritual journey (eg spending more quality time with your family, being more patient with your kids, feeling truly grateful for the abundance in your life, sharing more intimacy and love, being happy etc.).

While these comparisons can make you feel uncomfortable they are extremely valuable in helping us to prioritise what’s important in our lives. We rarely have the time or inclination to do this. Our New Year’s Resolutions can seem shallow next to these shadowy insights arising from our depths. Instead of avoiding or resisting these moments we should welcome them, give them plenty of time and space, write down some notes, search for more clarity and discuss them with an appropriate person.

Maybe we need to firstly clarify and set our inner spiritual intentions and then our material goals will be more appropriate and successful in our lives. Then these scary moments could end up being your most important Christmas present to yourself. Some questions you might include in this process are:

  • Are you relaxed?

  • Is your heart open to all feelings?

  • Is your mind open to all possibilities?

  • How present are you right now?

  • Are you ready to laugh?

  • Can you live in the mystery and not need to know?

  • Can you accept the paradox of your life and still be happy?
